Internship Requirements

The HFiT-UIP and Masters IP is now accepting applications.

All UCSD students are eligible, with priority given to applicants from the Global Health Major and Minor.  If you are not able to cross the border we have limited spaces for San Diego opportunities to help support the Health Frontiers in Tijuana clinic, students can also participate in virtual visits to the clinic via Zoom!

Please note that you will be asked to purchase scrubs with an HFiT logo if accepted into the program and you will be required to enroll in GLBH 111 a global health class on Mondays from 1 to 2:30 pm (optional schedule for Fall 2022 will be 11-12:30 PM).

All students will need to attend a clinic training session on week 1 of each quarter before they attend clinic or they will have to attend a clinic training session one week before their first clinic visit over the summer.

Note: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will schedule in-person and also the option for virtual visits to the HFiT clinic via Zoom for case discussions and shadowing in small groups.

Academic Year Info:

There will be a mandatory training set for Saturday of week 1 of each quarter.  Students will be assigned to two different groups upon acceptance to the program. Groups will rotate through HFiT every other week throughout the quarter, such that Group 1 will attend HFiT on the Saturdays of weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 and Group 2 will attend HFiT on Saturdays of weeks 3,5,7 and 9. Students are allowed up to two absences for the quarter but must make up the absence on the Saturday of the last week of the Quarter and/or the week after that. Students who are absent more than twice, do not notify the coordinator of an absence more than 2 days in advance, or do not make up their absence will be dropped from the program.

Summer Info:

Students will be assigned to one of two summer sessions upon acceptance to the program (enrollment is GLBH Summer session 1 or 2 is required). Groups will rotate through HFiT every weekend throughout the summer (July or August 5 weeks each session). Students are allowed one absence for the session but must make up the absence two weeks following the last site visit. Students who are absent more than once, do not notify the coordinator of an absence more than 2 days in advance, or do not make up their absence will be dropped from the program.

The program is five weeks over each summer session.

General Info:

Students are responsible for transporting themselves to San Ysidro in the morning, where they will walk together to the clinic with a team member from the leadership group. It may be possible to utilize public transportation or carpool with other students to the border, but HFiT will not coordinate ride arrangements. HFiT is not liable for any personal injuries (including death), property loss, or damages resulting from students transporting themselves to San Ysidro within the United States.

Students are required to have a currently valid passport, passport card, or SENTRI card in their possession.  If you have circumstances that prevent you from crossing the border please mark that when prompted in the application.  We have the option for Zoom visits and limited local opportunities for students who want health-related experiences in the San Diego area.

Previous participants must apply again for each quarter of involvement.

I have read and agree to the above requirements
