UC San Diego Future Faculty of Cardiovascular Sciences (FOCUS) Summer Institute is the newest member of the NIH Programs to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) initiative; an all-expense-paid Summer Institute, research education and mentoring initiative sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). 
 
Faculty research mentors must have a documented track record of successful training of postdoctoral scholars and students, extramural funding and a commitment to diversity.

In addition, research mentors must agree to commit to participate in
mentor training and the necessary time to assist mentees in developing a solid research plan and project.

Research mentors will receive a $5K stipend for their time commitment. 
 

The time commitment includes at least 24.5 hours of mentorship over a 12-13 month period, detailed as follows:

  • 5 hours per week during the 2-week Summer Institute I (July 9 -18, 2019)
  • 1-hour monthly conference calls over a 12-month period (between Summer Institutes I and II)
  • 2.5 hours during 2-day mid-year meeting (TBA winter-spring 2020)
  • 5 hours per week during 1-week Summer Institute II (TBA summer 2020)​
