Faculty Mentor Training Program (FMTP) | Interest Form
Thank you for your interest in the UC San Diego Health Sciences Faculty Mentor Training Program (FMTP). FMTP offers the following training opportunities to faculty mentors:
- Junior Faculty Mentor Training (Jr. FMTP): Open to assistant or associate professors, this formal, structured mentorship training is designed to support the success of junior faculty, while also improving their sense of satisfaction and engagement with UC San Diego. This training focuses on three mentoring competencies, maintaining effective communication, aligning expectations, and fostering independence. It is a two-hour session held in-person once a year.
- Senior Faculty Mentor Training (Sr. FMTP): Open to associate or full professors, this training for senior faculty enhances effective mentoring, and cultivates an environment where mentoring excellence is valued. It focuses on six mentoring competencies and meets NIH T32 requirements for training in effective mentoring. It is a three-part virtual training held over three 1.5-hour sessions each day and offered once or twice a year.
- Culturally Aware Mentoring (CAM) Training: Facilitated by Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) facilitators, the CAM training is a full day training that help faculty recognize how cultural differences can impact, complicate, and benefit your research mentoring relationships. All UC San Diego faculty are eligible to register, and there is no prerequisite to take this training. This full-day training is offered once a year with very limited capacity.
- The Art of Effectively Managing Individual and Generational Differences: This is an “edu-taining” workshop hosted by GOODSTOCK Consulting to train faculty mentors on effective communication strategies to bridge the gaps between different generations and varied personalities in the workplace. By participating, you will discover the unique attitudes, beliefs, and communication styles that define each generation that you mentor and supervise, empowering you to understand how these differences influence teamwork and collaboration. This workshop will equip you with practical techniques to engage in constructive dialogue and tackle the common challenges that arise in mentor-mentee relationships.
Individuals who do not meet any criteria listed here at the time of submission are still encouraged to submit their interest form.
